Ah. That's My Girl

When DH's and my sex cells played a million rounds of rock-paper-scissors to determine whose genes would be dominant in our children, my eggs were obviously unclear on the game rules. Or maybe my ova were just senile, being of the aged variety. "So ... you're saying I just keep saying paper, right?" I imagine my eggs asked foggily. "Oh yeah, that's how it works," replied DH's wily, wily sperm.

And as a result, out came the As. Big A looks and acts like a clone of my MIL. Little A has DH's temperament and looks. They do not resemble or act like me in the slightest. Not ever.

Which is why when I saw Big A doing this, I let out a big sigh of recognition. See, she IS like me after all!

Little A Keeps on Getting Bigger!

Just back from the pediatrician's office from a well-baby visit. Little A now weighs 19 and a half pounds! That puts her in the 70th percentile for her age, unadjusted for her prematurity. Her doctor says that adjusting her age is silly at this point, given the rate of her growth.

Here is a picture from yesterday, showing that she really will eat just about anything. (Including Mommy's yummy Economist.)

Perpetual Motion Girl

That's my Big A -- always on the move! Since I've posted several pics of Little A now, I feel like I should throw up some of Big A too, just to be fair.

(Throw up on the page, not throw up as in vomit. Though in a house with a baby and a preschooler, people tend to be well acquainted with the full spectrum of throw-up possibilities.)

Happy Five Months, Little A!

Little A is five months old today! Sometimes, comparing pictures says it all. The first photo was taken at five days old. The second photo is from last week.

Little A weighed 4 pounds, 13 ounces when we took her home from the hospital. She had a tiny meow rather than a proper cry back then, and due to her jaundice, DH took to calling her our little tangerine. At first we had to finger feed her every two hours around the clock because she couldn't nurse properly.

But the jaundice faded, she developed a strong cry (though she is so mild she barely uses it) and at some point she got the hang of nursing the old fashioned way. And next thing I know, somehow my little kitten of a baby weighs almost 15 pounds!

Amazing.

Easter Weekend!

Eldest Niece had her third birthday party on Saturday. It was a nice warmup for the sugarshock known as Easter that took place at our house on Sunday. As one can see from this photo, even little A, who only gets drunk on candy indirectly via her mommy, had to sleep it off after the birthday party.

Things DH & I Learned This Weekend

1)Dressing a three-year-old child in a white frilly skirt is cute for about three minutes. Then very stupid. By the end of Easter Big A looked like the "before" picture for a laundry detergent commercial. Except I don't think the skirt is going to be completely clean in any "after" scenario.

2) Bubble machine: Equivalent of the adult open bar for small children when it comes to ice breakers. Best $8.50 spent, ever. Let's get this party started!

3) Bubble solution, pink sidewalk chalk, and spit-up jellybeans combine to form a very strong epoxy when applied to toddler hair and just about anything else.
